Analysis
At 6-foot, 180-pounds, Johnson is a true hybrid strong safety/linebacker prospect. He played linebacker out of necessity for his high school team and looked pretty good doing it. His ability to come downhill to make tackles in a quick manner is a trait that he exhibits as a linebacker and safety. He may be undersized right now as a middle linebacker, but he more than makes up for it with speed, quickness, and an ability to play sideline to sideline. Active blitzer, shoots the gaps quickly. His defensive back skills at the safety position make it easy for him to cover at the middle linebacker position. Johnson doesn’t stay blocked for long, if at all, shedding blockers quickly to make tackles for short gains.
More game film of him at the safety position would definitely help his chances of being recruited more as a safety. I did get to view some clips of him in coverage. Needs to get lower when coming out of his break to drive on the ball. Whether it’s safety or linebacker, he’ll need to put on some additional weight in college. Has been a productive player on the defensive side of the ball for the past couple of years. I do think his ability to track the ball comes naturally. His pursuit leverage and angles to the ball are a strength for him. Will need to continue to improve on a more fluid transition out of his backpedal at the safety position. If he can go somewhere where the safety plays mostly in-the-box and covers tight ends, I think that’ll be a great fit for him. He could also operate at the middle linebacker position at 6-foot, 200-215 in college.
