Spotlight on Aerials: From GMTM to World Cup
In 2023, U.S. Ski & Snowboard hosted their first-ever Virtual World Flip League on GMTM and launched the Project Gold interest form, in order to attract new athletes to the sport of aerials. Through the Virtual World Flip League and Project Gold interest form, new athletes like Beaudin Napolitano and Kyra Dossa were able to participate in virtual events where they impressed Team USA coaches. Both Kyra and Beaudin are part of City Ski & Snowboard of Utah and compete in aerial events, a specific division of freeski.
From GMTM to Deer Valley World Cup
Recently, Beaudin and Kyra showcased their passion and aerial skills at the Deer Valley World Cup. At the base of White Owl and Champion Ski Run in Deer Valley, and with heavy snowfall making the event more challenging than usual, they both shined in competition. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) Freestyle World Cup, took place early in February of 2024.
Beaudin Napolitano is only 17 years old and garnered the attention of Olympic coaches by submitting his statistics and footage to the 2023 Virtual World Flip League, which ran for four weeks. Beaudin entered through GMTM, whose platform gave him access to this event. He is excited to continue developing his skills and growing within the sport while providing inspiration to future Olympic hopefuls.
Kyra Dossa, currently a 20 year old athlete, also caught the eye of Olympic coaches through the GMTM platform. She completed the Aerial Project Gold Interest Form last year, which gave athletes, like Kyra, a new way to get recognized by Team USA coaches. Kyra, and other top junior skiers, were able to create profiles on GMTM and submit video footage and statistics directly to Olympic coaches.
The Search for Talent Continues
U.S. Ski & Snowboard, continues to encourage athletes from all backgrounds to participate in their virtual offerings, including their new Showcase on GMTM. Kyra and Beaudin were able to compete in the World Cup events in the USA and Canada as a result of the recognition they gained through Team USA Olympic coaches on the GMTM platform. Continue to follow their athletic journeys on GMTM.
Founded in 1905, U.S. Ski & Snowboard is the Olympic National Governing Body of ski and snowboarding sports for the U.S.A. They currently provide support to athletes who compete in the following disciplines: alpine, cross country, freeski, freestyle, snowboarding, nordic combined and ski jumping.
Lillis First at U.S. Freestyle Ultimate Airwave Summer Grand Prix
Over the weekend, the best aerials athletes in the world spent the day stunning the crowd at the 2023 U.S. Freestyle Ultimate Airwave Competition and Olympic champion Chris Lillis took home first.
On the second stop of the inaugural FIS Grand Prix World Tour, Park City played host to a full day of world-class aerials competition and the world showed up, with athletes from Canada, Switzerland, China and Australia competing on the water ramps in front of a large home crowd.
Most of the Stifel U.S. Freestyle Ski Team aerials athletes were on the start list, including 2023 World Champion Quinn Dehlinger and Olympic champion Justin Schoenfeld. For the men, Lillis took home his first win of the Grand Prix, and second podium of the series (he was third in Switzerland the week prior). Dehlinger was the next American man, finishing the day in fifth place. For the women, 2022 Olympian Winter Vinecki led the strong U.S. team with a fourth place finish, with teammates Dani Loeb in fifth and Kaila Kuhn in sixth.
"This has been an event that we have been trying out and testing out around the world for about ten years now," said Lillis in a post-competition interview. "So to be able to put it into place has been amazing, and it's been a blast. I am really excited about today, and stoked to be leading the Grand Prix overall. This is a ramp I have taken thousands of jumps off in my career, so to put on a good show in front of the home crowd was amazing!"
A unique addition to the start list were up-and-coming aerials hopefuls, who were hand-selected to compete based on video submissions to the Stifel U.S. Freestyle Ski Team Aerials Pipeline: Digital Combine organized and supported by GMTM. Athletes Brayden Flynn and Beaudin Napolitano competed in Saturday’s competition, showcasing their skills on one of the bigger stages of the sport. The Digital Combine by GMTM is an athlete recruitment program that acts as a pipeline for athletes to reach the next stage of the sport.
“In partnership with the USOPC this past spring, we teamed up with GMTM to create an aerial athlete recruitment program that allows athletes to try out through a video submission or a virtual competition series," said U.S. Freestyle Sport Director Matt Gnoza. "It was so great to see athletes from the aerial recruitment program compete at the FIS level for the first time at the Ultimate Airwaves. U.S. Ski & Snowboard are excited to assist these athletes as they work to become the next great American aerial athlete.”
"Redefining pathways for athletes -- that's what we've been working so closely on with Matt and the team," said Connor Dietz, GMTM Co-founder. "For the first time ever, any athlete is able to participate and be seen by U.S. Ski & Snowboard, regardless of their location, sport background or socioeconomic situation. We're excited that these two athletes are the first of many to follow."
Next up, aerials athletes will travel to Australia for the final FIS Grand Prix World Tour stop before the start of the 2023-24 winter season.

Virtual World Flip League: Elevating Aerial Athletics Through Innovation
In a world characterized by continuous technological advancements, traditional sports organizations are leveraging digital platforms to evolve their events and engage a wider range of participants. The U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team exemplified this approach by launching the inaugural Virtual World Flip League (VWFL) on GMTM. The VWFL is a groundbreaking initiative designed to identify and promote the best Aerial athletes for their renowned U.S. Freestyle Ultimate Airwaves competition.
The Challenge for U.S. Ski & Snowboard
U.S. Ski & Snowboard faced the challenge of reimagining their athlete selection process for the U.S. Freestyle Ultimate Airwaves competition. Their team wanted to increase accessibility, eliminate geographical barriers, and attract a diverse pool of athletes to showcase their aerial skiing talents. The Virtual World Flip League was developed as a solution to address these challenges and create an innovative opportunity for aspiring athletes to shine.
Tapping into Technology as the Solution
The Virtual World Flip League emerged as an extraordinary solution, embodying the perfect blend of athleticism, technology, and competition. By integrating GMTM's digital capabilities, U.S. Ski & Snowboard created a virtual competition open to current Aerial athletes across the nation. This unique opportunity allowed participants to submit their best jump performances from anywhere in the world, eliminating the need for physical presence and geographical constraints.
The VWFL took place from July 1 to August 25, 2023, and was open to U11 through U19 age groups with an active paid-athlete membership. This inclusive approach ensured that talent would be discovered regardless of location or skill level, amplifying the sense of camaraderie and shared passion within the community.
Innovation and Impact
The campaign results highlight how successful the inaugural VWFL was for athletes and the team at U.S. Ski & Snowboard. The VWFL reached more than 1,000 new athletes with 40 athletes reaching leaderboards. These participant leaderboards were shared weekly, which helped heighten the sense of competition, encouraging athletes to continuously refine their jumps and improve their performances.
The groundbreaking nature of the VWFL was underscored by the transformation of virtual success into tangible triumph. Five athletes who excelled in the virtual league received invitations to the 2023 U.S. Freestyle Ultimate Airwaves competition.
Brady Flynn and Beaudin Napolitano were the two athletes who accepted their invitations and participated in the Ultimate Airwaves competition on August 26. Their success stories epitomize the power of the VWFL. Their top-ranking submissions earned them invitations to the 2023 U.S. Freestyle Ultimate Airwaves competition, where they competed alongside their peers who had come through traditional channels.
Brady and Beaudin’s journey from the digital platform to the real-world event showcased the potential of the VWFL to discover and elevate talent.
Redefining Possibilities for Athletes
The Virtual World Flip League, hosted by U.S. Ski & Snowboard on GMTM, has redefined the future of athlete selection and competition in the Aerial skiing domain. By harnessing the power of technology, innovation, and inclusivity, U.S. Ski & Snowboard not only identified top talent but also fostered a sense of community and engagement among athletes. The success of the VWFL serves as a testament to the organization's dedication to progress and excellence, inspiring other sports entities to explore the limitless possibilities of virtual competitions.

2023 U.S. Freestyle Ultimate Airwave Competition On Deck
On August 26, the Utah Olympic Park will welcome several of the best aerials athletes in the world to Park City, Utah for the 2023 U.S. Freestyle Ultimate Airwave competition.
The free event, running from 11 am - 6 pm on August 26, will feature most of the athletes from the Stifel U.S. Freestyle Ski Team aerials roster and athletes from Canada, Switzerland, China and Australia. Olympic champions Chris Lillis and Justin Schoenefeld are slated to compete alongside 2023 World Champion Quinn Dehlinger.
Also unique to the program - a number of athletes on the competition start list were invited based on their submissions to the Stifel U.S. Freestyle Ski Team Aerials Pipeline: Digital Combine, which was organized by GMTM. Young athletes from around the country were given the opportunity to submit videos showcasing their aerial talent, which was then shown to U.S. national team coaches. The jumps were reviewed and scored by US Freestyle Judges from across the country. Once the judges submitted the scores the top-ranked athletes were invited to compete in the U.S. Freestyle Ultimate Airwaves competition - five accepted the invitation and will now jump among some of the world's best.
On August 19, Switzerland hosted the first ramp event, and Chris Lillis took home a third-place medal. Now, the competition is back stateside for the second stop of the FIS Grand Prix World Tour. Next up: Australia.
Following the FIS Grand Prix event will be the Flying Aces show on the water ramps - a unique opportunity to watch the U.S. athletes showcase world-class tricks to the public. Come to the U.S. Freestyle Ultimate Airwave competition, stay longer for the Flying Aces!

Aerials Project Gold: U.S. Freeski Looks For Top Junior Skiers on GMTM
U.S. Ski and Snowboard is investing time into the thousands of elite junior freeski athletes working towards their podium dreams.
In a new pathway to their Aerials Project Gold Camps, the coaches at US Ski will be reviewing online submissions from junior freeskiers on GMTM.com. The new tryout process allows Freeski athletes - ages 12 to 19 - from all over the nation to submit videos and other metrics directly to coaches.
Athletes who impress the team staff could earn an invite to the 2023 Aerials Project Gold Camp this summer.
Aerials Project Gold Camps are progressive camps designed for elite-level talent development in freestyle aerial skiing. Top junior athletes are selected to attend the camp and train together with the U.S. Freeski Team coaches. Athletes with an interest in aerial skiing are encouraged to fill out an interest form through the GMTM app.
Typically, the invitations to Aerials Project Gold Camps are only extended to the top athletes in the Revolution Tour standings and the top finishers in USASA National Championships. The new virtual tryout on GMTM adds a new pathway, where more junior freeski athletes can be discovered after submitting competition videos.
The Aerials Project Gold Camp dates and locations are as follows:
AE Project Gold - East #1
Location: Lake Placid, NY
Dates: June 5 - 9, 2023
AE Project Gold - East #2
Location: Lake Placid, NY
Dates: August 28 - September 1, 2023
AE Project Gold - West #1
Location: Utah Olympic Park
Dates: June 26 - July 1, 2023
AE Project Gold - West #2

To create a profile and submit videos to coaches, head to the Aerials Project Gold Interest Form. Once there, you can submit an introductory video that tells the Team USA coaches about yourself and what you want to accomplish in Freeski. Athletes can also answer questionnaires about their experience and athletic background.
In the next activity, athletes can add highlights from Freeski competitions or practice runs. You can include more videos in your GMTM profile along with captions and accomplishments on or off the snow.
If you have more questions about how young Freeski athletes can get involved with US Ski and Snowboarding, visit their organization page - OR - reach out to us at support@gmtm.com.
