USA Football and GMTM will hold the second U.S. National Team Digital Combine with GMTM to identify elite athletes. The Digital Combine will be open from Aug. 14-Sept. 11. USA Football invites athletes from all sports interested in exploring or deepening their involvement in flag football to participate in the free online event.  Adult and junior athletes who complete the full U.S. National Team Digital Combine through GMTM will be included in the pool of athletes considered for invitations to the 2024 U.S. Flag Football National Team Trials. The Boys’ and Girls’ 15U and 17U National Teams will compete against international opponents in the annual Junior International Cup in 2024. The Men’s and Women’s National Teams will represent the U.S. in the 2024 IFAF Flag Football World Championships, in Lahti, Finland.  Last fall, USA Football received over 600 individual submissions in its inaugural Digital Combine. USA Football extended invitations to the National Team Trials to eight of the athletes who made positive impressions on the coaches who reviewed and evaluated their virtual submissions.  Flag football’s popularity is exploding both domestically and internationally. An annual participation study from the Sports and Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) revealed that 7.1 million people in the U.S. participated in flag football in 2022. The sport is also played by 20 million participants across more than 100 countries. USA Football is hopeful that flag football’s surging popularity will secure the sport a spot in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Athletes without prior experience in flag football are encouraged to participate in the Digital Combine by creating profiles and uploading their virtual submissions through GMTM. Many members of the gold-medal winning 2023 National Teams are talent transfers from other sports. This is the perfect opportunity for athletes to showcase the traits they cultivated across their athletic careers.  The seven unique activities in the Digital Combine do not require a football or a teammate. Activities are designed to be completed by individual athletes and test athletic ability. Each activity is accompanied by a tutorial.  The Digital Combine is split into categories for junior athletes ages 12-16 and adults 17 or older. If an athlete participating in the event turns 18 years old by Dec. 31, 2024, they will be considered ineligible for the 2024 17U National Team and should sign up for the adult category.  Athletes interested in the Digital Combine should download the GMTM app and create profiles. Participants who miss the opening Aug. 14-Sept. 11 combine window will have a second opportunity to complete the free event later this fall. About GMTM: GMTM (pronounced Gametime) is a social network designed to connect athletes, organizations and brands, so that they can maximize their reach and access to opportunities. GMTM believes that all athletes should have access to opportunities regardless of income, geography, or background, at every level of their playing careers. Flag football? Not enough like what they play on Sundays? Get that thought out of your head. Flag Football is here - with teams built for every athlete - playing at every skill level around the country. That is how Josiah Johnson, a former Nicholls State DB - who could be trying to play on Sundays - ended up making this one-handed touchdown catch in a flag football game. %FILM-8220296% Whether he knows it or not, USA Football coaches who are in charge of selecting the Men's National Flag Football team might see that. My guess is Josiah will get a nudge to try out for the team. You can actually try out for the Olympic flag football team right here on GMTM. If you didn't know that, you should check out the USA Football Digital Combine right now. Or you can watch more videos Josiah uploaded to the platform this week.

The sport of Flag Football has continued to grow in popularity in recent years. The introduction to the international stage - paired with the lack of contact in comparison to other major sports - has helped make flag football one of the most exciting team sports for adult men and women. According to the AFFL, a professional flag football league in the United States, participation in the sport has grown by almost 25-percent in the last decade. The increase in competitive opportunities is helping increase the popularity of flag football. The AFFL hosts tournaments with dozens of professional teams nationwide and allows athletes to earn money while playing. It's also growing on the youth level and among female athletes. School districts and NFL teams around the United States are supporting more Flag Football teams and tournaments for female athletes. But of all of the exciting news surrounding the sport of flag football, one opportunity is the biggest of them all - the opportunity for flag football athletes to represent the United States on the National Team. Yes, USA has a National Flag Football Team - and it is filled with athletes from all backgrounds. USA Football assembles the National Team to play in international games against countries from across the globe. How does USA Football pick players for the National Team? Staff at USA Football - which operates under the USOPC - has created a new pathway for adult athletes who want to earn a spot on the National Team. The four steps included in that process are outlined below: Step 1: Talent Identification Scouting for the U.S. National Team takes place at USA Football Sanctioned events and/or partner events. Adult athletes also have the opportunity to be scouted through GMTM. These are events that occur for different teams and sports that allow athletes to show up and show out from wherever they are located in the country to get scouted. Learn more: Athletes Who Earned Their USA Football Tryout Invite on GMTM Step 2: Roster Selection The top athletes scouted in a calendar year (in-person & and virtually) are invited to the U.S. National Team Trials. Trials are a 3-day event at the U.S. Performance Center (USPC) and athletes will be looking to make the following teams based on age: Boys 15U, Girls 15U, Boys 17U, Girls 17U, and Adult Men, and Adult Women. Step 3: Team Preparation The athletes selected to each U.S. National Team roster are invited back to the USPC for a U.S. National Team Training Camp (a 3-day, in-person event). The athletes will become a team, working together in drills and learning the playbook. Step 4: Competition Upon completion of the Training Camp, athletes will compete against international competition at the IFAF Championship scheduled for that calendar year. If you think you have what it takes to represent your country on the flag football field, complete the USA Football National Team Interest Form. The athletes who will represent the United States at flag football tournaments across the world are found on GMTM. Start your journey today by creating a profile and joining the USA Football network. The Indianapolis Colts and the Cleveland Browns have announced their support for USA Football's Youth Coach Certification process. This initiative aims to provide young athletes and their families with healthy and positive experiences through football. By providing evidence-based knowledge, resources, and skills to coaches, the Youth Coach Certification ensures that coaches teach age-appropriate skills and take a holistic approach to both child and athlete development. The Colts will be providing USA Football Youth Coach Certifications for more than 1,200 youth football coaches across Indiana in 2023. Similarly, the Browns and University Hospitals have committed to providing more than 1,500 Youth Coach Certifications to local youth coaches in Northeast Ohio in 2023. These generous contributions ensure that thousands of young athletes will learn from certified coaches this year. Enrollment with USA Football is free and open to all youth football organizations, and all Indiana youth football coaches whose leagues enroll with USA Football are eligible to receive Youth Coach Certification at no charge thanks to the Colts. Northeast Ohio youth football coaches whose leagues enroll with USA Football are also eligible to receive Youth Coach Certification at no charge thanks to the Browns and University Hospitals. The certification encompasses the Football Development Model (FDM), which aligns with the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee’s long-term athlete development principles. At its foundation, the FDM focuses on progressive skill instruction that teaches young athletes age-appropriate skills and meets them at their current stage of development. Scott Hallenbeck, CEO of USA Football, expressed his gratitude to both the Colts and the Browns for their commitment to youth football. “They step up to the plate every year to ensure thousands of kids enjoy the fun, fitness, and friendships gained through football in safe and healthy environments overseen by coaches who are prepared to help them grow as athletes and individuals,” he said. The Coach Certification process is an important initiative for youth football organizations. The USA Football website notes that “USA Football’s Coaching Certification program is committed to advancing coaching education and enhancing the sport of football.” By providing coaches with evidence-based knowledge and skills, the Coach Certification program helps to create a safer and more positive environment for young athletes to learn and grow in the sport of football. In addition to providing Youth Coach Certification, USA Football also offers additional resources for coaches, including the Youth Tackling & Contact System, developed tpo give coaches "the ability to learn the core principles of Prep for Contact, Flag Pulling & Tackling, Blocking and Defeating Blocks." By supporting the Coach Certification process, the Indianapolis Colts and the Cleveland Browns are demonstrating their commitment to the growth and development of youth football. They are also setting an example for other NFL teams and organizations to follow. The support of these two teams ensures that thousands of young athletes in Indiana and Northeast Ohio will learn the game of football from certified coaches who are prepared to provide age-appropriate instruction in a healthy environment.
